The classic children’s book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, written by Hiawatha native Bill Martin, Jr., with John Archambault and illustrated by Lois Ehlert, was the featured book for Kansas Reads to Preschoolers in 2011.
The state-wide kickoff event for Kansas Reads to Preschoolers was held November 14 at the Morrill Public Library. First Lady Mary Brownback was on hand to read to the children and help celebrate Hiawatha’s beloved children’s author, and the music program by the children of Happy Days Preschool was a treat for all.
Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is a program of the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library that promotes the importance of reading to the very young in our state.
Our local celebration began at Hiawatha’s annual Halloween parade. Our Chicka Chicka Boom Boom band had lots of fun with our chicka drums and coconut tree hats. Many thanks to all the volunteers who helped.
