What makes Library Giving Day special for 2021?
For Library Giving Day this year, we are asking patrons to donate in support of the library’s beloved elevator. It has been a part of our historic building for nearly 30 years and, unfortunately, we have been recently informed that its existing parts are wearing down at a fast rate. Because of the elevator’s age, these parts can be hard to find and in some instances, they have to be built from scratch to keep the elevator in operation. There is an opportunity to modernize the elevator to bring its parts up to date and keep it from breaking down over and over again, but this process is costly at upwards of $60,000. When making a donation, please keep this service in mind as it is the only way wheelchair users and other patrons with limited mobility are able to access our second floor.
Throughout 2020, we adapted to respond to our patrons’ desire to continue to enrich their minds and nurture their curiosity. We’ve helped those staying at home navigate the digital library landscape and provided valuable distance learning resources to people of all ages in our community.
On Library Giving Day, we can all come together as champions of our local libraries. Thank you for helping us stay strong. We’re so grateful for your support.
How do I give to Morrill Public Library?
Morrill Public Library is one of about 50 public libraries in the Northeast Kansas Library System (NEKLS), which gives patrons access to over a million items throughout the system via Inter-Library Loan. Through our relationship with NEKLS, Morrill Public Library has partnered with the Northeast Kansas Library Foundation to be able to take online donations for Library Giving Day! The Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization established in 2009 to support NEKLS. They are able to accept a variety of gift types, including credit cards, stocks, and bequests.
After following the link, click on “GIVE NOW,” pick “Morrill Public Library” from a drop-down menu, and then fill out the rest of the donation form. Morrill Public Library raised over $21,800 in donations in honor of Library Giving Day last year!
What is Library Giving Day?
Library Giving Day started as an idea generated by the Seattle Public Library Foundation. The concept was to create a national day of giving that public libraries would rally around and that the public would embrace. So, Seattle Public Library partnered with their strategic library fundraising partner, Carl Bloom Associates, to turn the idea into a reality.
Library Giving Day is a one-day fundraising event with the goal of encouraging people who depend on and enjoy public libraries to donate to their local library. And in turn, that support will go toward the incredible programs, services, and materials provided by local libraries all over the country.
This campaign reminds us that libraries, small and large, serve as a cornerstone for our communities. In addition to well-loved books, many libraries offer innovative programs that promote lifelong learning, connect patrons to technology, and advance knowledge.
The day to celebrate Library Giving Day is April 7, 2021.
